Für Verity Studios entwirft die Nachwuchsdesignerin Léa Pereyre magische, poetische und zirkusreife Kostüme für Drohnen. Hinter ihren verzauberten Flugwesen stecken viel Fantasie und harte Forschungsarbeit.
Biokunststoffe feiern Konjunktur. Etliche als solche bezeichnete Werkstoffe und Produkte drängen auf den Markt und schmücken sich mit Nachhaltigkeits- und Ökoaura. Doch wie steht es wirklich um das angeblich kompostierbare Geschirr fürs Takeaway aus der Mensa, mit Picknick- und Partybesteck aus Naturmaterialien?
Die Sonderpräsentation von Material-Archiv wirft Schlaglichter auf das Thema hinsichtlich Zusammensetzung der neuen Kunststoffe und ihrer Ökobilanz. Exemplarisch wird anhand einer Reihe von Biokunststoffen und Naturfaserkompositen die Komplexität gezeigt und strukturierte Zugänge zu diesen Materialien geboten.
Material-Archiv ist ein Bildungsnetzwerk für Lehre, Forschung und Praxis in den Bereichen Architektur, Kunst, Design, Restaurierung und Konservierung. Es begreift Materialien als Grundelemente gestalterischen Arbeitens und führt historisches wie aktuelles Wissen über Werkstoffe zusammen mit dem Ziel, eine grosse Bandbreite an Werkstoffen unter transdisziplinären Gesichtspunkten sowohl für Fachleute als auch für Laien zu erschliessen.
An der Design Biennale ist Material-Archiv mit der Ausstellung «Bio oder Kunststoff – oder beides?», einer Kooperation von Gewerbemuseum Winterthur und Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, repräsentiert. Über zwei RFID-Stationen können Interessierte in der Online-Datenbank Materialmuster identifizieren und weiterführendes Materialwissen zu Gewinnung, Herstellung und Verwendung, sowie zu historischen, kulturellen, sozialen und ökologischen Kontexten abfragen. Am Donnerstag Abend wird an der BioabbauBAR ein offener und kritischer Diskurs über Materialien und Werkstoffe von Morgen lanciert.

Material-Archiv, a network for teaching, research and practice, asks about the materials of the future in the exhibition “Bio oder Kunststoff – oder beides?” (“Organic or plastic – or both?”). At the BioabbaBAR, you can ingest resources, test applications and discuss eco-balances.
Bioplastics are en vogue. Many materials described as such push into the market and flaunt the feathers of sustainability and ecological soundness. But what’s the truth behind the supposedly compostable dishes for the take-away at the canteen, picnic and party cutlery made from natural materials?
The special presentation by Material-Archiv sheds light on the topic regarding composition of the new plastics and their ecological balance. The complexity is exemplified by a series of bioplastic and natural fibre composite exhibits, which enable structured access to these materials.
Material-Archiv is a network for education, research and practice in the fields of architecture, art, design, restoration and conservation. It sees materials as basic elements of design work and brings together historic and current knowledge of component materials, with the aim of tapping a wide range of materials for interdisciplinary experts and laypeople. At the Design Biennale, Material-Archiv is represented by the exhibition “Bio oder Kunststoff – oder beides?”, a cooperation of the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur and the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Via two RFID stations, interested visitors can identify material samples in the online database and request information about collection, production and use, as well as historic, cultural, social and ecological contexts. On Thursday night, the BioabbauBAR launches an open and critical discourse about the materials and components of tomorrow.

Wie werden die Probleme wirklich gelöst, wie und wann werden sie verlagert? Unter welchen Umständen macht Biokunststoff Sinn und dient nicht nur der Beruhigung unseres schlechten Gewissens? Kann Biokunststoff die Brücke schlagen zwischen ethischer Verantwortung und wirtschaftlicher Rationalität? Welche Rahmenbedingungen braucht es dazu? Material-Archiv geht diesen Fragen auf den Grund und zeigt Herausforderungen, die Designer und Designerinnen in Zukunft annehmen müssen um Produkte aus nachhaltigen Materialien gestalten zu können.

How do problems really get solved, how and when do they get shifted about? When does bioplastic make sense and isn’t just there to soothe our bad conscience? Can bioplastic bridge the gap between ethical responsibility and economical rationality? What kind of framework is required for this? The Material-Archiv investigates these questions and shows challenges that await the designers in the future, when they wish to make products from sustainable materials.
