The project offers a contemporary interpretation of the «sarāparda» —a Persian term referring to a relic of Central Asian nomadic herders, who used it to enclose a patch of pasture and create a temporary ceremonial space. This ephemeral enclosure challenges the garden as a symbol of settled life. In today’s urban context, it invites reflection on new meanings of commons and their boundaries.

  Die mobile, leichte Struktur interpretiert den «sarāparda» neu. Der persische Begriff setzt sich aus «saray», Palast, und «parda»‚ Vorhang, zusammen und steht für ein Relikt zentralasiatischer, nomadischer Viehhalter:innen. Um die Grenzen eines temporären Lagers zu definieren, trennten sie vorübergehend ein Stück einer blühenden Wiese ab. Durch die ephemere Einfriedung wurde das lebenswichtige Weideland zu einem zeremoniellen Raum. Ein Akt, der die gängige Definition eines Gartens als Artefakt eines sesshaften Lebensstils in Frage stellt und zu einem neuen Verständnis heutiger Commons in der Landschaft einlädt.

  Wild blühende Wiesen lockten seit jeher Nomadenvölker in die Bergsteppen West- und Zentralasiens. Diese gehörten niemandem ausser denjenigen, die sie während ihrer saisonalen Wanderungen vorübergehend bewohnten. Zur ersten Vegetation im Frühjahr zählten feuerrote wilde Tulpen. Die Schönheit der rot blühenden Felder wurde weithin gefeiert und ihre Bilder in die Kunst und Ikonografie von Stammes- und Hofkünstler:innen integriert, insbesondere in die von Frauen gewebten Textilien.

  Bei der Installation im Alten Botanischen Garten UZH handelt es sich um einen mehrteiligen Paravent, dessen Sequenzen einen visuellen Essay über die Reise der aus Zentralasien stammenden roten Blumen nach Westen darstellen. Jedes Paneel zeichnet ein archiviertes Textilfragment nach. Die Entwürfe wurden in einem Stil neu interpretiert, der an europäische Chintz-Stoffe erinnert, auch bekannt als «Indiennes». Durch die Wiederaneignung dieses Mediums zielen die textilen Paneele darauf ab, das Erbe der roten Blumen zu ehren.

  The mobile, lightweight structure offers a new interpretation of the sarāparda. The Persian term combines saray (palace) and parda (curtain) and refers to a relic of Central Asian nomadic pastoralism. To define the boundaries of a temporary camp, a portion of a blooming meadow was temporarily enclosed. Through this ephemeral enclosure, the vital grazing land was transformed into a ceremonial space—an act that challenges the conventional definition of a garden as an artifact of sedentary life and invites a new understanding of contemporary commons in the landscape.

  Wildflower meadows have long drawn nomadic peoples to the mountain steppes of Western and Central Asia. These lands belonged to no one but those who temporarily inhabited them during seasonal migrations. Among the first spring vegetation were fire-red wild tulips. The beauty of these red-flowering fields was widely celebrated, their imagery woven into the art and iconography of tribal and courtly cultures—particularly in textiles crafted by women.

  The installation in the Old Botanical Garden at the University of Zurich consists of a multi-part screen whose segments form a visual essay on the journey of the red flowers from Central Asia westward. Each panel traces a fragment of archived textile. The designs have been reinterpreted in a style reminiscent of European chintz fabrics, also known as Indiennes. Through the reclamation of this medium, the textile panels aim to honor the heritage of the red flowers.

What does your workspace look like?
A bright, light-filled room with a large table, collected plant remnants, inspiring natural objects and curiosities. The walls are covered with sketches, experiments, photographs, and a variety of materials for art and model-making—plus coffee and tea.

 How would you describe your style?
Delicate yet powerful, playful and intentional.

What topics do you explore in your work?
Landscape as imagination, perception, historical traces, ecology, beauty, ornamentation, botany, commons, field research, and ethics of care.

 What changes do you observe in the design world?
A growing awareness that landscape architecture plays a key role in shaping a fairer and more ecologically conscious future.

Where do you find inspiration?Outdoors—by the river, in the forest; in films and novels; in exhibitions by our favorite artists.

Über About

Nicole de Lalouvière ist Postdoktorandin am Lehrstuhl für Geschichte und Theorie des Städtebaus an der ETH Zürich, wo sie seit 2019 mit Professor Tom Avermaete zum Thema «Commons» forscht. Lara Mehling ist Teil des Teams von Lorenz Eugster Landschaftsarchitektur und Städtebau. Zudem ist sie als freischaffende Gestalterin tätig und Mitgründerin von After Apricots. Die beiden Landschaftsarchitektinnen arbeiten seit 2013 zusammen, als sie sich in Zürich kennenlernten. Ihre Arbeit widmen sie transdisziplinären Themen an der Schnittstelle von Landschaftsökologie und Geisteswissenschaften.

Nicole de Lalouvière is a postdoctoral researcher at the Chair of History and Theory of Urban Design at ETH Zurich, where she has been researching the topic of “Commons” with Professor Tom Avermaete since 2019. Lara Mehling is part of the team at Lorenz Eugster Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. Additionally, she works as a freelance designer and is a co-founder of After Apricots. The two landscape architects have been collaborating since 2013, when they met in Zurich. Their work focuses on transdisciplinary themes at the intersection of landscape ecology and the humanities.
